Location


Shilong town is located within the north part of Dongguan prefecture-level city. It is situated at the central point of the Pearl River Delta, in conjunction with Zengcheng and Boluo County, 69 km to Guangzhou city and 78 km to Shenzhen city. The town lies on the beach of the Dongjiang River and the Guangshen railway (Chinese: 广深铁路)passes by.

In 2004, Shilong's GDP amounted to 3.66 billion RMB and the scale export income boosted to $1.14 billion. Shilong is very strong in the IT industry. For instance, 2.4 million cameras, 3 million computers and 750 thousand photocopiers and 1.8 million digital laser printers were manufactured in Shilong last year and most of them were exported.

History


During the Song dynasty , its first inhabitants settled down in Shilong town. Due to the convenient waterway of Dongjian river, Shilong had become a major hub for food supply and woods in the southern China since the late Ming dynasty to the early Qing dynasty. After the opening of the Kowloon-Canton railway at 1910, which passed through Shilong, its status as a traffic and commercial center had been strengthened and its economic boomed. Shilong made its name in history as one of the 'Four Big Town in Canton' . Thanks to its famous weightlifting world record breaker - Chen Jin-Kai , Shilong also has won its reputation as the 'Home Town of Weight Lifting' .

Ke Yuan

Ke Yuan , located at BoXia West Dongguan city, is one of the Four Great Gardens of Guangdong. Ke Yuan represents the Lingnan garden architecture.

Ke Yuan was built during the Qing Dynasty by Zhang JingXiu. Construction started in 1850 and was finished by 1858. After that, Ke Yuan has been expanded and reconstructed a few times.

Zhang JingXiu was first and second assigned as AnChaShi of the Guangxi and Jiangxi provinces by a Qing dynasty emperor. After he retired and returned to his home town Dongguan he lived in Ke Yuan.
Zhang was good at and fond of Chinese writing, painting, chess, poetry, antiquing, stone collecting, etc. He invited friends, poets, scholars and painters to gather in Ke Yuan. And that’s how Keyuan became one of the origins of Guangdong culture.

Compared with the other three gardens, the significance of Ke Yuan is far beyond just being a private own garden. Ke Yuan could be considered the origin of Lingnan culture, for example, the famous lingnan style painting was originated in Ke Yuan.

Humen Town

Humen , also known as Taiping, is a county-level city within the Dongguan prefecture-level city, on the eastern side of the Bocca Tigris on the east bank of the Pearl River Delta, in the Guangdong Province of southern China.

Humen is a thriving city crowded with consumer-goods factories. These factories also
fueled population expansion from emigrating workers around the country seeking factory jobs. Furthermore, Humen is geographically advantageous for the factories due to its proximity to two large metropolitan cities and exporting harbors, namely Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

The history of Humen is linked to the First Opium War . It is in Humen that Lin Zexu supervised the destroy of large quantities of seized opium . Some major battles in the First Opium War were fought here and in the Bocca Tigris.

Travel and transport



Humen is located at the eatern end of the Humen Pearl River Bridge.

Humen is served by regular direct buses traveling south from Guangzhou, and one can continue south by bus to Shenzhen's Window_of_the_World theme park, from which one can continue on to the Hong Kong border by bus or the Shenzhen Metro.

A ferry service connects Humen to Hong Kong International Airport.

Humen Pearl River Bridge

The Humen Pearl River Bridge is a suspension bridge over the in Guangdong Province, southern China. It connects the Nansha District of Guangzhou to Humen Town of Dongguan. Completed in 1997 it has a main span of 888 meters.

Economic significance


The Humen Bridge across the Bocca Tigris, the mouth of the Pearl River, is an important link in the expressway network of Guangdong Province in southern China, connecting the Shenzhen and Zhuhai Economic Zones, as well as the rest of the coastal region, with Hong Kong and Macau.

Features


The 3618-m-long bridge is divided into five sections: the east approach, the main navigation channel section, the middle approach, an auxiliary navigation channel bridge, and the west approach. Geological conditions at the bridge site are relatively good, with bedrock overlaid by thin soil layers, although conditions differ on each side of the river. Hurricanes are common occurrences, so the design wind speed at the bridge deck level was established at 61 m/s.

Dongguan railway station

The station is configured in a northwest-southeast alignment. Trains departing to the northwest continue along the Guangshen railway towards Guangzhou. To the southeast, there is a junction where the Guangshen railway merges with the Jingjiu railway . The Guangshen railway continues south towards Hong Kong. The Jingjiu railway continues east though the station then onwards towards Beijing.

Dongguan New Century Leopards or Dongguan Leopards or Dongguan New Century are a basketball team in the South Division of the Chinese Basketball Association, who take their name from Dongguan, Guangdong and play home games at .

They were runners-up in the 2004 championship and were promoted to the CBA for the 2005–2006 season.

In their first season in the CBA in 2005–2006, Dongguan New Century finished in seventh and last place in the South Division, out of the playoffs.

Dongguan East railway station
